Project Idea and Inspiration Blog Post

Project Idea:

The project idea that me and my group have created revolves around two central characters. To be specific, there will be an individual named Austin bullying another character named Asher. After our initial introduction, the rest of the film will be about Asher and his personality, the backstory of Austin and why he would be bullying Asher, and the general plot overall.

To decide how exactly we wanted to portray our characters, we had decided to write the characteristics of these individuals, which would help us to determine their actions in the scene. For Asher, he would be a 15-year-old student who is an only child and straight-A student. He would also be a very clean and organized person, which would help to exemplify his quieter and strange personality. When we were creating this character, I had been inspired by the character "Hannibal," from the popular film "Silence of the Lambs." This is because I had wanted Asher to be strange and unusual like Hannibal, and also more reserved and calculated in his actions and decisions. This would help me and my group to create a character inspired by the famous villain while still generating a whole new individual for the film.

(The Silence of the Lambs: 1991)

For our character Austin, we had decided for him to be a 17-year-old student at the same high school who has a single dad and does Boxing. He would be well known at the school, but would be struggling in his academics because of his focus on Boxing. I believe that this character was inspired from a multitude of areas, but specifically correlating to a specific bully from a popular film. For example, in the film "Back to the Future," Biff Tannen is unrelenting in his treatment of George McFly, who is a quiet individual like Asher. Although he is from a more light hearted film, I believe that he is closely related to our interpretation of a bully. In this dynamic between Asher and Austin, there will be a strong dichotomy between the two, allowing for a strong contrast between the two that would increase the intensity of the sequence and overall quality of the production.

(Back to the Future: 1985)

The plot would focus on Asher walking home from school alone, with the first central shots focusing on his actual move back to his house. He would then be interrupted by Austin, who after obtaining the wrong answers from Asher, is furious at him and wants to get his revenge. However, in his rage, Asher murders Austin before the scene cuts to the title sequence and then the following scene, which would be Asher at his house. This section would then provide the audience with initial information about the strange personality of Asher. We had decided not to overexpose why Asher acts and feels the way he does because we felt that it would not only take away from the rest of the film, but it would also lower the quality of our opening. Although we had Asher commit murder in the very start of the film, the audience still doesn't know the underlying motives and allowing his personality to still remain a mystery. With this opening, I believe that we would be able to pull in our audiences with the intensity of Austin's murder, and then build upon it and his character with the scene of Asher at home.

Additionally, my teacher, Mrs. Stoklosa, had recommended that me and my group watch the film "Falling Down," not only because of its similarities between Asher's behavior, but also of an individual being pushed too far. To be specific, William Foster, a divorced and unemployed man, begins to go onto a journey across Los Angeles to reach his daughter's birthday. Along the way, he encounters a multitude of different people from various areas of society, all of which he deal with in his own way. This relates to Asher as he is also pushed over the edge and resorts to violence for his solution, which is also what William does throughout the course of "Falling Down." I believe that with the information from this film, me and my group will be able to understand the possible qualities and actions of a person pushed over the edge as seen in the movie's main character.
