Group Meeting #1 Reflection Post

Group Meeting #1 Summary

For our 1st group meeting, we had decided to set it up so that everyone could explain their project idea along with certain techniques and ideas they were hoping to use in it. For example, one of the members of the meeting, Jade, had various plans regarding her project which she called "Static." To be specific, she would base it around the foggy memory of a women kept in an insane asylum, using props such as dirty hospital gowns and police equipment. She had also hoped to create her own set for her project, using white and wooden boards to create a cramped room for the woman. I had advised her that although she had a unique concept, she would have to be wary of the challenges that might come with creating her own set. I had pointed this out because in creating personal films and projects, the limitations of a created set would cause the overall quality of a project to deteriorate. I proposed that if there is ultimately a lack of resources for the set, she could move the white boards to coincide with her differing shots. In this way, she would be able to still use her idea of a personally created set while not lowering the quality of her overall project.

Throughout the entirety of the meeting, the quantity of content that people had for their project varied. Some members had no clue as to what their project should be about while others had concepts but no central idea. For instance, a member of my group, Sofia, had wants to do a coming of age story that contains elements of summer. It was about a single mom going back to college and the plot would either have the mother learn she is terminally ill or find out her best friend is dead. She would support this through flashbacks that would show exactly how stressed the mother was in the initial reveals of information. Although she had these unique and creative ideas, she admitted that she was still missing the "meat," of her story. I pointed out that the plot could center around flashbacks, where the entire movie would have been about the events before the initial flashback sequence set up in the introduction. This would allow her to focus on the story elements that she had wanted to include while making sure that her introduction could logically be extended into a larger film.

Throughout the meeting we had also analyzed each others blog posts to see what information we had specifically written down for our project ideas. In doing this, we became more efficient because the individual who was presenting their idea could build upon the points and information the group as a whole were reading in the blog posts. This was made apparent for another group member named Amelia, who had shared her blog with us, which is where we had read her comprehensive plot and what she was hoping to achieve with it. In having a good idea about what the plot was about, we were able to ask specific questions about the story, which allowed us to understand her concepts further. In analyzing her coming-of-age story about a girl wanting to travel the world and her idea of a shot on the beach, I had suggested taking footage during the golden hours of the day. In doing this, it would be a perfect example of natural light as I had learned in my lighting schemes blog post, increasing the quality of her overall project.

When the group had gotten around to analyzing my project idea, they had widely agreed with my group's ideas. To be specific, the idea was a violent and quiet student being bullied on his way home, and with the use of suspense lighting, audio, and camera techniques, he would murder his bully. This would allow the audience to see his evil nature that would be exemplified throughout the rest of a possible film. My group had suggested however that I watch American Psycho. This is because it includes a variety of suspense elements and is widely associated with the genre. I appreciate this information because now I will be able to increase the success of my group's project through feedback from the meeting. In doing this, we were all able to benefit and improve different aspects of our projects not previously known by us.
