For my shots assignment, I needed to tell a story using 15 specific shot types that illustrated tone and idea.
I decided to tell a hopeful story of a small toy hippo that was lonely and became friends with a toy whale that found itself in a comical predicament.
I believe I did a good job in producing an over-arching story that had a clear plot, tone, and message. Additionally, I think the shot order I created allowed my story to move at a steady pace and not waste opportunities to tell and give details of the story. I also used color in the final shot of my story to emphasize the joy that the toy hippo and whale felt now that they were together, which helped the viewer to feel the emotion felt in the scene. My favorite shot in the story was the low angle shot of the hippo falling down because the hippo naturally has a surprised expression, which fit perfectly for the scene. However, I believe that I could have improved the framing and labeling of shots. I used realistic shots to describe my story when for this assignment, I should have used more exaggerated shots in order to demonstrate my understanding of the specific shots required. For example, in shot #5, I labeled my shot an "extreme close up" but I should have shown a picture of just the hippo’s eye. Another change I would have made would be shot #11. I would have the body of the whale and hippo take up more of the frame in order to be a close up shot. This was a fun introduction to shots and I learned a lot about what I need to improve on for future assignments.
